I am Florian 'Floyd' Mueller, a professor of Human-Computer Interaction at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia.
Abridged biography
Florian 'Floyd' Mueller is Professor of Future Interfaces at Monash University (Melbourne, Australia), where he leads the award-winning Exertion Games Lab. Previously, he was at RMIT, Stanford, University of Melbourne, Microsoft Research, MIT Media Lab, Fuji-Xerox Palo Alto Labs, Xerox Parc, and industrial research organization CSIRO. He featured on the top 100 human-computer interaction (HCI) researcher list and was the first Australian-based researcher to be selected to chair the CHI conference: HCI’s highest-ranked publication outlet. Floyd’s games have featured on the BBC, ABC, Discovery Science Channel, and in Wired magazine, and they have been played by more than 20,000 players, across three continents. Floyd is also a member of the prestigious ACM SIGCHI Academy, an honorary group of leaders “who have made substantial contributions to the field of HCI”.
Full biography
Florian 'Floyd' Mueller (also: Florian Müller; Florian Mueller) is a researcher and educator in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), interaction design, computer science, and play and games. He is a full (tenured) Professor of Future Interfaces and Director of Research in the Department of Human-Centred Computing (a top 20 HCI department) at Monash University (a top 100 university in Melbourne, Australia). Floyd is also director of the university’s award-winning Exertion Games Lab, where he leads research into the intersections between technology, the human body and play.
Floyd’s research pursues an interaction design agenda to support human values, including living an active life. His work helps designers and computer scientists to better understand the relationship between effort and our computer-mediated interactions. In this regard, Floyd originated the argument that we should not just design “easy-to-use” interactions (previously the dominant paradigm) when “hard-to-use” interactions can also be beneficial. By coining the term “Exertion Interface”, Floyd charted a path for design agendas that venture beyond easy-to-use, including movement-based interactions, whole-body interfaces, uncomfortable interactions, somaesthetics, and, more notably, exertion games.
In 2021, the Australian Institute of Policy and Science awarded Floyd a “Tall Poppy” award that recognizes “intellectual and scientific excellence”, the first time given to someone in Floyd’s field since the inception in 1998. Floyd has received some of Australia’s largest and most competitive research grants (achieving a 14% success rate on Australian Research Council Discovery Project applications) and has been listed as one of the top 100 most productive HCI researchers. He has over 250 publications, mostly through the HCI field’s premier outlets, including CHI, CHI PLAY, DIS, TEI, Ubicomp (IMWUT), UIST, IJHCS and ToCHI. He has received ten “Best Paper Honorable Mentions Top 5%” from these outlets (5x CHI, 1x CHI Case Study, 2x DIS, 2x CHI PLAY) and two “Best Paper Top 1%” at CHI PLAY and CHI. Floyd has been appointed as associate editor for tier A journals, including Elsevier’s IJHCS (International Journal of Human-Computer Studies), ACM’s (Association for Computing Machinery) IMWUT (Interactive, Mobile, Wearable and Ubiquitous Technologies) and Now Publisher’s Foundations and Trends in HCI. He co-established the first CHI Sub-Committee on “Games and Play” as well as the CHI PLAY conference series. He was selected to be general co-chair for CHI PLAY’18 and then CHI’20, becoming the first Australian-based researcher to spearhead HCI’s highest-ranked publication outlet.
Floyd’s work has been widely awarded, recognized, and played. He is an inaugural honouree of the Australian Design Centre’s Australian Design Honours. His work has been shortlisted for the European Innovation Games Award (next to Nintendo's WiiFit), received a Nokia Mindtrek Ubimedia Award and a Wired's Nextfest commission. His games have been featured on the BBC, ABC, New Scientist and the Discovery Science Channel, winning him a “Media Star Award”. So far, more than 20,000 people, across three continents, have played Floyd’s games. Floyd is also a member of the prestigious ACM SIGCHI Academy, an honorary group of leaders “who have made substantial contributions to the field of HCI”.
Prior to Monash, Floyd worked at RMIT University and the University of Melbourne, and he was a principal scientist at the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), where he led the Connecting People research group. Floyd also co-founded and directed the Centre for Game Design Research at RMIT University: Australia’s largest, HCI-oriented game design research centre. Four years after receiving this PhD, and while technically still an early-career researcher, Floyd was promoted to full professor. Having worked in the area of bodily interfaces across four continents, and at organizations including the MIT Media Lab, Media Lab Europe, Fuji-Xerox Palo Alto Laboratories (FXPal), and Xerox Parc, Floyd was awarded a Fulbright Visiting Scholarship at Stanford University. He has start-up experience, has been a Microsoft Research Asia Fellow and has worked at the Microsoft Beijing lab.
Floyd's latest research is on the Exertion Games Lab website: exertiongameslab.org
